AVIATION ISSUES PAPER WILL DO NOTHING FOR AUSTRALIAN AVIATION

7 months into the biggest crisis ever to hit Australian aviation, the Morrison Government has deciding now is the time to release an issues paper on the struggling industry.
Even before their paper was released however, the Government was distancing itself from parts of their plan, hurriedly backtracking after springing potential changes to Sydney Airport’s curfew on unsuspecting Sydneysiders.
This is symptomatic of a Government which has spent the entire crisis flying blind, picking winners and standing by as thousands of jobs are lost and more put at risk at Virgin Australia, Qantas, Dnata and airports around the country.
If the Morrison Government continues to fail to come up with a plan for the industry, these will not be the last jobs to be lost.
Just this week Australian airlines such as Virgin Australia and Rex joined with air transport operators and aviation businesses in an open letter to highlight the immediate threat posed to Australia’s flying schools, simulator centres and maintenance organisations. This will be just the latest corner of the sector hit by the Morrison Government’s failures.
Changes to Sydney Airport curfews won’t get the industry back up in the air.
The Morrison Government urgently needs a plan to support the entirety of the aviation sector as it recovers from the Covid-19 impacts.
