Keep Australia’s rural and regional landscapes beautiful

The Australian Government is encouraging all Australians to get involved in Keep Australia Beautiful Week, this week—from 21 to 27 August and make a contribution to a litter-free and sustainable environment.

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Luke Hartsuyker, said Keep Australia Beautiful Week was a great opportunity for communities across the country to do their bit to protect our iconic rural and regional landscapes from being damaged by litter and other waste.

“When people think of litter, they probably think first of urban landscapes—but it’s just as important to keep rural and regional Australia beautiful and free of pollution from litter,” Minister Hartsuyker said.

“That’s why this year I’ll be taking the pledge to pick up one piece of litter each day during Keep Australia Beautiful Week—and I encourage all Australians to join me. It’s a simple step, but together we can make a big difference.

“Australia is renowned for our beautiful and unique countryside and coastlines. Coming from the NSW Mid North Coast, I know first-hand the tourism these natural assets attract is essential to many rural and regional economies—so we should all play our part in keeping them beautiful.

“It’s estimated that litter costs us as much as $350 million each year, with roadside litter—particularly along highways—one of the most common and damaging types of litter in Australia.

“I hope that all Australians will get involved in Keep Australia Beautiful Week this year—find out more at kab.org.au.

“I also remind Australians that each and every day across the country, there are 100,000 Landcarers working to help keep Australia’s natural resources beautiful, productive and sustainable for future generations.

“If you would like to play a part in this important work, I encourage you to get in touch with your local Landcare group,” said Minister Hartsuyker.
